We have two resident counsellors at the clinic, each with their own style. Both have written about what they do and who may benefit from counselling.
Jan Newbould writes:
"My counselling style could be described as eclectic integrating many models including client centred therapy, cognitive and behavioural therapy and art therapy which I often use. I may work with a client one to one in my room or we may choose to walk along the beach. At some stage they may wish to bring their partner or a member of their family along to include in the counselling process. Although as the counsellor I am in control of any situation I regard the client as having control of their own process and as such to be responsible for their own behaviour and actions. As the counsellor I facilitate the session and I work both intuitively and holistically to ensure the best outcome for my client, hence I am very mindful of how vulnerable a client often feels and I prefer a more gentle approach with my clients, challenging when necessary, and always looking to affirm them. I encourage them to become aware of the power of their thoughts and to act accordingly.
People seek counselling for many different reasons and they may not always have the confidence, knowledge or the energy to seek out an appropriate counsellor for themselves hence they may be referred to counselling by the court , their doctor, other healthcare facilities or a friend. Word of mouth often works best but we need to be mindful that what suits one person is not necessarily best for someone else. I believe the relationship between two people, especially in counselling is all important and that without a certain rapport , empathy and trust, the counselling process may be ineffective hence I would not expect a client to continue their counselling process with me if we did not build a satisfactory and confidential relationship.
Some of the reasons people may seek counselling for are to deal with issues such as:
The benefits from counselling are often felt by the client immediately, while for some it may take longer. Just in the process of talking and unburdening to an empathetic listener who is both trained and objective can be a huge relief for the client. In the fast and hectic pace of life today not many of us get the opportunity to talk uninterrupted if necessary, for at least an hour. Many feel as if a huge weight has been lifted off their shoulders especially if they have been validated and affirmed by the counsellor and also allowed to cry if necessary. Suicidal thoughts may abate, depression can be lifted and a whole change of attitude for the client may take place. Relationships with other people may also change and sometimes quite dramatically. The client will become a happier, calmer and a more healthy person as a result. They will learn to love themselves more and other people in their lives; they will learn to give and to receive and to be appreciative of many things that they may not have been aware of before.
People may also seek counselling because they may be at a crossroads in their life and they may want some help with clarification at this time. Some people may just want extra support at a time when family and friends may not be available."
